Tell us about yourself…Hi, my name is Lindsey Ratner and I am the owner of Linnie Pins. I specialize in toddler size backpacks, but have recently expanded into making adult size backpacks as well! I love to sew and create, but I also have a day job. I am an elementary music teacher in Carmel, which is also where I grew up. I have a 3 1/2 year old, who inspired my very first backpack. Little ones love to have their own things and do things themselves. A backpack is a great way to give them some independence. It also cuts down on what you have to carry when going out. I absolutely love making backpacks and can't wait to share them at the Indy MADE Market!
How and when did your business get started? I started my business in the summer of 2015. My then 2 year old was about to take her first plane ride and I wanted a backpack for her to carry on board with her treats, books, and toys. After I made her bag, I noticed that there aren't many bags small enough for a toddler to carry on the market and so that is why I began my business.
What is your favorite product in your shop? Tell us how you came up with it. My favorite item is the toddler backpack! They are so cute and fun to make. I love to shop for new fabrics and have found some pretty amazing pieces....sloths and hedgehogs might be my personal favorites!
Where do you find your inspiration and creativity? I spend a lot of time with my toddler so I am inspired a lot by what she is drawn to. I also love fabric. As much as I love to sew backpacks, I also love to buy the fabric. I've made well over 100 backpacks at this point, and I still love the last step when I can turn it right side out and see the finished product. It never gets old.
What are your favorite things about being a vendor in a handmade market? I am still new to the market scene, but I truly love seeing all of the amazing vendors. It's fun to see the amazing work that others are creating. It's also a nice little community and I have gotten to know some of the other vendors through doing the same markets, which has been a lot of fun. I also love to see what the shoppers are drawn to whether it's in my booth or someone else's.
Give us 5 fun facts about you and/or your business…1. My business name came from a childhood nickname, Linnie Pin. 2. I teach at the same elementary school that I went to as a child. 3. My mom and sister own an awesome fabric store in Fishers called The French Seam. It's a great way to get inspiration as they have beautiful fabrics. 4. My daughter also loves to "sew" and has a great time playing in my sewing room. 5. Along with doing markets, I love to do custom backpacks as well.
