Tell us about yourself
I am a mid-50's yr old mother of 3 4-legged children. I work full-time in a technical job and my mixed media art gives me that creative outlet I enjoy, and makes it easier to handle day to day life.
How and when did your business get started?
I have been creating art for as long as I can remember. The mixed media started as sort of a fluke a couple of years ago. I have a tendency to collect craft supplies. In an effort to clean out a cluttered craft closet, I started adding things to a canvas. The results were very interesting and pleasing to me. The rest as they say, is history. I didn't get much accomplished that day as far as cleaning out my craft closet, but Mixed Media By Lisa D was born.
What is your favorite product in your shop? Tell us how you came up with it.
My favorite piece of art is always the last one I have completed. It's difficult to pick a favorite. Most of my art is pure inspiration. I usually start out with an idea of what I want the finished piece to look like and then it totally changes as I go along.
Where do you find your inspiration and creativity?
My inspiration comes from everything around me. I can look at an object or a subject and be inspired by colors, shapes or sounds. For example: Some people look at sheet music and see notes on a page. I look at sheet music and see the shapes of the notes along with the colors and feel of the paper. I see how with just a bit of modification, it can become an interesting background on a canvas.
What are your favorite things about being a vendor in a handmade market?
I really like talking to people at handmade markets. I love answering questions about what I do and how I do it. I always check out the expression on a persons face when they first step into my booth area. Usually it's a smile. Sometimes it's a tilt of the head. My work is unusual and unique and sometimes it takes just a minute to figure out what you are seeing. I love that part.
Give us 5 fun facts about you and/or your business
1. I am an avid animal lover. I currently have 2 dogs and 1 cat. 2. Born and raised on the east side of Indianapolis. 3. I use my media art as a creative outlet. 4. I sometimes lose track of time when I'm creating. Because I work a full-time job through the week, I often have to set an alarm clock in order to remind my self, it's time to go to bed! 5. Away from the craft/art shows, I'm a pretty shy person. There is something about talking with someone about my art that brings out the chatter box in me. I don't know what it is, but I like it.
